A very special treat for you all today, below is perhaps the most powerful mantra to have every graced our existence. The mantra invokes the full power of consciousnes to come and bless us with all it’s splendour and glory…
The transliterated Gâyatrî Mantra written as: om tat savitur vareNyaM bhargo devasya dhîmahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayât. Swami Shivananda’s English translation of the Gâyatrî Mantra is: We meditate on the glory of the Creator; Who has created the Universe; Who is worthy of Worship; Who is the embodiment of Knowledge and …Light; Who is the remover of all Sin and Ignorance; May He enlighten our Intellect.
This is a wonderful rendition. What do you think of those Gurus and Brahmans who claim that this mantra is only for the trained pundits, and it can be destructive for ordinary seekers to chant it? I have been told that by both guru and devotees who are studying Sanskrit, yet it sounds rather haughty to me. What is your opinion?
There is a specific way of chanting the mantra. The vibrations should be correct in-order to get the right effect.
I’ve been thought to recite, during my Upanayana. (a ritual conferring the mantra)
The style is entirely different.
Its not the mantra, or the the music, but the sound vibrations, that imparts the effect. If you need the right effect, recite the way it needs to be.
In this post. The music is what makes us feel good. Its a cognitive commercial charm transfer.
wonderful to listen to it this morning!
SUPRABHAT SANJIB…!!!!!!!!
wow such a beautiuful and amazing Mantra …that is on our ears from the first day of birth and whole life with us …i would like to refer to its meaning and importance so that everyone can enjoy and feel it at hearrt and soul..
.Gayatri Mantra (the mother of the vedas), the foremost mantra in hinduism and hindu beliefs, inspires wisdom. Its meaning is that “May the Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path”. The mantra is also a prayer to the “giver of light and life” – the sun (savitur).
Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life,
Remover of pain and sorrow,
The Bestower of happiness,
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light,
May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.
Gayatri, the five-faced Goddess, is said to have domain over the five senses or pranas, and protects these five life-forces of those who chant the Gayatri Mantra. In her role as the protector, Gayatri is referred to as Savitri.
Hence the Gayatri is unique in that it embodies the three concepts of stotra (singing the praise and glory of God), dhyaana (meditation) and praarthana (prayer).
The prayer form of the Gayatri be used to pray to Lord Shiva is called Rudra Gayatri. Similarly, one may sing Ganesha Gayatri for Lord Ganesha, Hanuman Gayatri for Lord Hanuman, and Saraswati Gayatri for Goddess Saraswati.
The Vedas are widely considered to be the source of all true knowledge, the word “Veda” itself meaning “Knowledge”.
Gayatri Devi also gave to mankind the “Gayatri Mantra”, also known as the “Guru Mantra” or the “Savitri Mantra”. It is one of the oldest mantras, and generally thought of as being amongst the highest and most powerful mantras of all. This mantra is therefore often referred to as “the Mother of the Vedas”. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna had proclaimed to Arjuna – “Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri”.
Chanting of Gayatri Mantra removes all obstacles in our path to increased wisdom and spiritual growth and development. The teachings and powers incorporated in the Gayatri Mantra fulfill this purpose. Righteous wisdom starts emerging soon after Jap(recitation) of the Gayatri Mantra is performed..The ideal times for chanting the mantra are three times a day – at dawn, mid-day, and at dusk. The maximum benefit comes if it is chanted 108 times .
This Gayatri mantra has both the powsers of Mantra and Prayer..so just chanting it has inherent power in it…having positive influnece and when it is in the form of prayer it has more phiolosphical meaning..
SO IT IS ALL IN ALL …having so many deep meanings that we can go on and on understanding it…and going more deep into it..
Thank you so much Sanjib..it is indeed like a treat for us..as We cant think of our existence without this Mantra in every house in every ritual in every problem or happiness or even when we are in calm state these words are like the important part of our memories and naturally on our lips that we dont even can guess how many time in our lives we have spoken this without thinking the literal meaning of it
…but tody i literaly went to understand and feel the deeper meaning behind it….and that made it more precious and more powerful for my rest of life….

Thanks for letting many of us know the real meaning of these lines which v have been chantin contiously or subcountiously dnt know how many times..!!
Thanks sanjib for posting such nice topics daily..
Thank you for enlightening us.
I would like to share the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step by step..
(A) OM BHUR BHUVAH SWAH:
Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om.
The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it to other colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent).
Therefore, it was the first ever revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, “Omiti ekaksharam brahma”, meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12).
This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally heard beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven.
They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy = 1/2 MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or store house of energy (prana).
B. TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM: Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect.
Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person.Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars).
A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under:-
C) BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI:
Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do japa of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra).
This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under:
D) DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path. Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra: The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.)
That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing/respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our(nah) intellect dhiyo.
wow Rekha & Bhavyata, thanks so much for your beautiful explanations:)

thanks a lot for the Gayatri Mantra…….often I hear….. but I think I needed today….feeling very good
This is nice one…
Thanks Sanjib
…..I really love this mantra.
Wow…..Thanks…
this is the creative freedom that singers and artistes take into their own hands – to make music cassettes and cash in on the devotional craze across people…
taking a mantra – like the Gayathri – and making a song out of it neither has the desired effect nor the intended impact on the listener – except for making known that it is the said mantra…
any mantra is to be chanted in the prescribed manner – with the correct pronunciation and actually with the prescribed yantra and tantra – for the total effect of sound and its uplifting inner phenomenon…
or else its like calling out Grace as grass…
pronunciation is everything in mantras…
Hi Natesh
Yes you are absolutely right, pronounciation is everything especially when dealing wiith subtle vibrations of these sacred mantras….and unfortunatley there are many people who do use spirituality as a means ofr making money…
that’s why I take extra special care when selecting the bhajans and mantras for this site…… nearly all the musicians whose works get selected here don;t make a penny from their music, everything goes towards seva projects around the world……
also, nearly every singer here has also been ratified by a guru..and deemed appropriate with the end result…
this particular version of the gayatri mantra is played in ashrams all over India… not anyone can perform a bhaja, it requires a huge amount of grace and blessings from a divine soul for the sounds to come out right…
love
Sanjib:)
